Prior to Aura, James founded Oportun (NASDAQ: OPRT), which recently completed its IPO and was named a Top 50 Most Genius Companies by Time Magazine. As CEO from 2005-2012, he led Oportun from its development as a nascent start-up to a market leader in the alternative lending industry and raised over $250 million of venture capital and debt to fund its growth. James has served on the Federal Reserve Board’s Consumer Advisory Council and its Centennial Advisory Committee and helped pass legislation in California and the US Senate (Title XII of Dodd-Frank) to promote safe and affordable alternatives to payday loans. In 2013, he was awarded the Jerry Porras Latino Leadership Award by Stanford’s Graduate School of Business for his work as an entrepreneur helping Latino families build credit in America.
James also serves as Vice-Chair of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG), a 501(c)(3) association of 300+ technology companies in Silicon Valley, as a trustee of the Katherine Delmar Burke’s School, and as director of SEO San Francisco, a non-profit organization dedicated to solving the achievement gap in San Francisco. Previously, Mr. Gutierrez was a member of the Board of Directors for the Association for Enterprise Opportunity, the largest trade association for non-profit micro-business lenders.
James is a partner of Insikt Ventures, an early stage financial technology fund with investments in OnDeck Capital, Listo!, and Blend Labs. He is also an early investor in over twenty startup companies, including Trulia (merged with Zillow), OkCupid (acquired by Match.com), StubHub, and Talent Inc.
Mr. Gutierrez holds a B.A. in Economics from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Stanford's Graduate School of Business.

Previously, Prophet held senior executive product marketing roles at Microsoft including corporate vice president of Windows and Search Marketing, where he was responsible for Windows, Bing, Cortana and MSN brands. He was also co-executive sponsor of Blacks at Microsoft and founding executive of BlackLight, an organization empowering Black marketers at Microsoft.
Prior to Microsoft, he led worldwide operations for what is now HP Inc.; and before that, he lead worldwide operations for Carrier Corporation (a United Technologies Business). Before that, he was a partner with Booz Allen Hamilton.
Throughout his career, Prophet has worked as a champion for human rights and social justice, including protecting the rights of young workers, educating female workers on health issues in developing countries, improving schools for children of migrant workers and addressing the root causes of migratory worker flows. He is also passionate about community service, focusing on ensuring low-income teens get college educations, as well as improving healthcare for children and HIV-positive women in the San Francisco Bay Area.
His work has been widely recognized - by appointment to the National Academies of Sciences Board on Energy and the Environment; recipient of China’s 3 Gorges Award and Shanghai China’s Magnolia Silver Award. He also received Booz Allen highest distinction for Client work - their Professional Excellence Award.
Prophet holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Engineering from General Motors Institute and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

In 1984, while still in college, Martin started his first business, Urban Capital Corporation, one of the early leaders of the loft movement in downtown Manhattan.
This was soon followed in 1986 by Medicorp Services, a Canadian biotechnology company, a pioneer in AIDS and PSA testing.
Martin's third business, Viatel Ltd., Martin’s first venture into the world of telecom, was founded in 1990. This company is best known for inventing call back and building the first pan European fiber optic network ahead of liberalization.
Martin’s best-known ventures were founded during the last decade. In 1998, Martin started Jazz Telecomunicaciones (Jazztel), Spain’s second largest publicly traded telecom operator.
In 1999 Martin founded Ya.com, Spain’s third largest internet web site/DSL provider that includes the second largest Spanish language web agency www.viajar.com. But not all of Martin’s companies were successful.
In 2000, Martin started Germany’s leading cloud computing company, Einsteinet, and the company was sold in 2003 at no return to him or investors.
In 2005, Martin founded Fon. With over 23 million hotspots, Fon is the largest WiFi network in the world. The company is headquartered in Madrid, Spain but its customers are worldwide. Its investors include Atomico, British Telecom, Coral Group, Skype, Google, and Index Ventures.
In 2014 Martin joined the Supervisory Board of Axel Springer, the largest media company in Germany.
In 2015, Martin founded Prelude Fertility, which raised $200M in financing and is now one of the largest networks of fertility clinics in the United States. Prelude Fertility offers egg freezing, IVF, and egg donation.
In 2017, Martin started VAS Ventures in partnership with Axel Springer to invest in early stage ventures across Europe and the USA.
In 2019, Martin launched the MVB fund, a $200M fund of funds based in Spain. MVB invests in top performing venture capital funds and pre-IPO technology companies.
Martin also manages the Varsavsky Foundation and is best known as the founder of two large educational projects in Latin America – Educ.ar (Argentina) and EducarChile (Chile) and the Safe Democracy Foundation.
Martin was Ambassador at Large of Argentina from 2001 to 2005. He is also on the Board of Trustees of the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation, and is a Member of the Board of Directors at Instituto de Empresa, Spain’s leading business school, where he taught entrepreneurship for eight years. Since 2012 he teaches entrepreneurship at Columbia University and New York University.
Martin has written numerous articles on business and international relations that have been published in several international publications including El Pais and Newsweek. Martin is also a frequent speaker at conferences around the world and an active blogger. He is the recipient of various honors and rewards.
Martin received his BA, from New York University, and holds a MA, in International Affairs and an MBA from Columbia University. In his spare time, Martin enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, piloting, photography and sailing.
Martin is married to Nina Varsavsky and has seven children.
